Union, 03 February 2011.

The Old Public Market hosted the weekend a "Technical Training Course Baton Twirling 'technical and sporting a form of what is known as groups of majorettes with great popularity in universities and U.S. sports events, consisting precisely 'to spin the stick' through colorful choreography.

The course, organized by the Spanish Federation of Baton Twirling (FETB), had as main instructor Ramón Hernández, technical manager of the FETB, and attended two days of about 50 people from groups Monteagudo, Aljucer, The Cotillas towers, Alguazas, Puerto de Mazarron and La Union, the latter represented by Llamusí Group.

According to Hernandez, this conference seeks to "promote the activity of 'twirling' within groups of majorettes teaching various movements and choreography with a cane, a type that in his view," normal activity involves moving to a closed room with practices similar to those that can be performed in rhythmic gymnastics or figure skating. "

"They are also motivated because the Region of Murcia is starting to force it along with Catalonia in the 'twirling'" says Hernandez, a fact that will be reflected on the 28th and 29th May, when it takes place in Murcia XXIV Championship Spain in Baton Twirling, an event that also requires the training of teachers.

Mari Carmen Llamusí aspires to be one of those teachers making the transition from traditional to majorettes Baton Twirling, after 17 years of practice in La Union and 12 as director of group created to preserve the well accepted method for the festivities of the municipality .

"It means a very noticeable difference," says Llamusí.

"I've never seen majorettes as they had always made steps with legs drumming, but the 'twirling' is a technique that employs more rod legs, a sport that I like much more than what I practiced up to now ".

For his part, Ramon Hernandez believes that the practice of this activity "requires extra effort because the coordination body-stick and body elements are most important and difficult", while admitting that "it is exciting, because once you acquire a greater level, you may consider to spend gymnastics, something that happens in Catalonia for the years of practice there. "

The Spanish Dance Sport Association has proposed to take this year to Baton Twirling a supervised activity so that the Sports Council to recognize it as a sport in its own right.
