Andrés Pedreño: "The neighbors of Portman and the society Murcia need guarantees of how they are doing the works in the Bay" (21/05/2017)

Andres Pedreño has visited - together with representatives of the League of Neighbors of Portman, of the Associations of Neighbors of the Llano and El Gabanzal, and of the Sierra Minera Foundation - the environment of the Bay, as well as the old pyrite rafts, to know On-site how the regeneration works of Portman Bay are being carried out.

Pedreño has toured the different places around the Bay, where he has been able to learn from the hands of experts and the neighbors of the area, the state of Portman Bay, once the first work started for the regeneration project.

Thus, the regional deputy of We, has informed that We can take to the Regional Assembly, a battery of measures in relation to the work of regeneration of the entire Sierra Minera, since the neighbors of Portman and the environment "need to know in a way Transparent how the regeneration works of the area are being carried out, so we will ask for guarantees of compliance with the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and for that, it is necessary to implement, among other measures, the Plan of Environmental Monitoring, provided in the DIA to control the potential environmental impacts of the Bay Regeneration project, which we must not forget that it has to treat very toxic wastes such as yellow sands.

In this sense, Pedreño also added that it is necessary to create the Technical Commission to oversee the work of the regeneration of Portman Bay, also provided for in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

"This commission understands that it is fundamental to supervise and coordinate the work of Regeneration of the Bay, and should have local representatives and associations of civil society," according to Pedreño.

Deputy Andrés Pedreño has been able to check how the old pyrite rafts of the Roberto Lavadero, near the town of Portman, remain outdoors and contain residues such as arsenic or sulfur, which poses a health hazard and a risk to environment.

"It is unacceptable that in the XXI century the neighbors of the Sierra Minera people have arsenic and other toxic substances in the doors of their house, especially when, as we know from different studies, there is evidence of a serious public health problem" , has manifested.

"And yet, the administration is not taking advantage of the beginning of the works of the Regeneration of the Bay to simultaneously treat this swamp of old pyrite rafts, and render inert the toxic accumulated there," said Pedreño.
