The Union has the Mina Groups Vicenta everyone (29/01/2009)

The Mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé, President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, accompanied by Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, and Deputy Government in the Region of Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, have submitted in the main event Day of the Region of Murcia in the International Tourism Fair (FITUR), Mina Groups Vicenta.

More than 2000 years ago, Carthaginians and Romans exploited the fabulous silver mines of La Union, which arrived to work more than 40,000 men.

Nineteen centuries later, mining regained its glory with new sources of iron, lead and zinc, then legend emerging from the amazing city which was called the "New California."

Today's Union for the visitor returns of these holdings, Mina Vicenta Groups within the Route 33 Trail Mining, former gateway to the Sierra used by the miners.

Mine dates back to 1890 and remained so until mid-twentieth century, while for the extraction of pyrite, a mineral from which iron is obtained.

This is one of the mines visited Europe's largest, with more than 2,300 square meters open to the public at 80 meters deep.

Huge galleries, special vaults, huge pillars and even an underground lake of reddish water form a unique and different, a place open to the senses.

And thanks to a spectacular musealization (special effects, audio, articulated dummies), visitors should be prepared to travel in time and move to another time when you see how they lived and worked for former miners.

The Mayor of La Unión, Bernabe Francisco, said he was "tremendously proud of the recovery of our mining heritage for the enjoyment of all citizens and grateful for the important contribution of the regional administration in this project," while emphasizing that " Groups Vicenta mine will be, next to the Teatro Romano de Cartagena, one of the major tourist attractions of our region. "

The President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, stressed that "Groups Vicenta Mine is, from this moment, the jewel of the Sierra Minera and one of the areas of reference for regional tourism."

In addition, Valcarcel said that "the mine will be an engine for development of the city of La Union."

The target date for the inauguration of the Mina Groups Vicenta is spring and summer of this year.

To date, the investment in this important tourist bet reaches 1.2 million euros, which will exceed 2 million, thanks to the support of Regional Government, embodied in the following agencies and policy areas: Highways (under Road 33), Directorate General of Industry, Energy and Mines (electrification of the complex and risk elimination miners), Directorate General of Tourism Infrastructure (adequacy museum of Route 33), as well as the municipality of La Union and also , the Central Government (Recovery of Mine Paid laundry).

Characteristics of the mine

The method of operation of this mine was underground room and pillar, one of the most characteristic of the Sierra.

The mineral is found as a mantle: the layer of ore is tilted, so the mine, which was following the inclination to get the ore, we also found in various levels of exploitation.

During the visit, walk through four levels.

In the first level, you can discover how a key mining pine structure that holds the roof.

As it progresses, the tracks are distinguished by where the cars were crawling mineral filled, leading to the unloading area.

When you reach the fourth level, you will notice that the fifth floor is flooded.

That water, which has been leaking and accumulating in the lower level has formed a small but extraordinary red water lake.

It should be noted that all of the mine has been musealised, equipping media, special effects and staging, which will manage to move the visitor to the years of mining in La Union, experiencing first hand what it was like working underground.

Currently, we are proceeding to the conditioning of access to Mina musealization thereof.

The opening is scheduled for spring of this year, an act that will be attended by the Regional President, Ramón Luis Valcárcel.

The project of adaptation and enhancement of Vicenta Groups Mina has been made by the Sierra Minera Tourist Consortium, consisting of the City of La Union, the City of Cartagena and the Ministry of Tourism of the Autonomous Region of Murcia.
