The Minister of Public Works signed the agreement to rehabilitate the neighborhood of San Gil and surrender the keys of the houses in the first phase (23/12/2008)

The Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, signed this morning, with the mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé, and Vice President of the Fundación Sierra Minera, Juan Miguel Margalef, the agreement to rehabilitate the neighborhood of San Gil and handed over the keys of 12 buildings that the Autonomous Community, through the Housing and Land Institute, has recovered for the comprehensive regeneration of the district.

The rehabilitation works of these social housing built in 1980, began in December 2007 and are the result of the agreement between the Ministry, the municipality of La Union Foundation and Sierra Minera, by which the Autonomous Community has financed the course performance the demolition of the ruined items, sanitation facilities and the recovery of property and its environment.

The final phase of the project has a total cost of 1,829,975 euros, of which the Community is funding 83 percent, 1,513,175 euros, while the Ministry of Housing will provide the remaining 17 percent.

This new project will take place on 48 homes and represent the culmination of the recovery of the neighborhood, said Integral Rehabilitation Area.

With the intervention, which includes the demolition of seven blocks of flats, eliminate energy deficiencies and insulation of buildings, structural elements are retrieved, improve accessibility and livability and proceed to adjust the common areas.

According to the Minister "the social and physical conditions in which these houses are made it necessary to design a framework for joint action with all concerned authorities for urban and social transformation in the neighborhood of San Gil."

For this, the regional government has relied on the comprehensive development program in which Sierra Minera Foundation works with a global action plan that meets several needs of the neighborhood and the city and has the participation and involvement of population in improving their quality of life.

Fundación Sierra Minera, which has been assigned premises in the same blocks that are being rehabilitated, is making a social rehabilitation work with the families of the slum areas, such as children, women and family, community and youth to develop the educational processes of children, youth and adults, to promote the employability of unemployed youth and to involve the population in the rehabilitation and maintenance of housing.

Regional investment in housing rehabilitation

The investment made by the Department in the district of San Gil will amount to 2,721,616 euros eventually.

Ballesta said that "given the current crisis, the regional government is betting on numerous public works projects and housing rehabilitation, as this one, are a significant economic boost in the municipalities of the region and become a generator employment

"An example of this, he added, are recently approved investments to rehabilitate other homes, down to the 929 properties in cities such as Las Torres de Cotillas, Cartagena, Lorca, Puerto Lumbreras, Cieza, Totana, Mula, will involve an investment of more than 4,745,000 euros from the regional government. "
