Work on the Portman Bay progressing satisfactorily (10/07/2008)

The Government delegate, Rafael González Tovar, accompanied by the mayor of La Union, Francisco Martín Barnabas, visited this morning the Portman Bay, where the head of the Coastal Authority (Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine) Francisca Baraza, has explained the work being done to regenerate it.

Tovar Gonzalez recalled that the action that the Government of Spain is carrying out in Portman Bay is the regeneration project and a major environmental recovery in Europe ", which consists of a first level of action to recover land contaminated, and a second consisting of the feedback itself.

At present, within the first level of action, has already completed construction of a pilot plant to be located in laboratories and is intended for environmental adaptation and treatment of contaminated materials by experts at the University of Murcia, with the aim of getting the best treatment of this material and move it to constructive feedback Portman Bay.

Within the second level of action with respect to the final regeneration project, it already has the Environmental Impact Study, which is subject to public information and consultation institutions, and continues its administrative procedures in the absence of the Environmental Impact Statement .

The Government delegate considered that the proposed regeneration of the bay of Portman is "a clear example of collaboration between administrations" and that the agreement signed in 2005 by the Ministry of Environment, the Autonomous Community of Murcia and the City The Union has been the legal framework "that has led to progress in the shared commitment to provide the resources needed to solve this problem."

Tovar Gonzalez stressed that the Government of Spain, wishing to keep constantly informed of those affected, accounts for all administrations, representatives of neighborhood groups and social stakeholders from all works in progress and recovery project Portman, through the Monitoring Committee whose last meeting took place in February.

The commitments made by the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs at the technical progress, to date, successfully.

On it are reported in detail at the next meeting to be convened in the Monitoring Committee, as will other governments on their own as, for example, the Autonomous Region in relation to future marina.
