The regional government discusses the details of the recovery of Portman Bay (28/03/2014)

The Governing Council has known the details of the process of regeneration of Portman Bay, the largest in Spain in environmental recovery, whose bid announced yesterday by Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, President of the Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, and the mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé.

The announcement of the contest will be published in the Official Gazette for the month of April.

After publication, the companies interested in developing the project shall have 20 days to submit their bids.

Then the jury will consider them and is scheduled for the end of June, the company select responsible for executing the works.

This draft environmental recovery are to dredge 40 million cubic meters of existing sterile until the funds and the original coastline of 1957, the date on which the discharge, removing them entirely initiated, covering a 126.2 surface hectares.

Thus, a historical debt environmental character with the Region of Murcia, which will not only generate short-term benefits in terms of job creation, it will revitalize an area of ​​natural and touristic value for Region settled.

The development of this environmental restoration project will have no cost to the government, and will be financed by the contractor of the works by the recovery of iron minerals (magnetite and siderite) deposited in the bay, using thus a basic principle in waste management such as recycling raw materials and resources contained therein.

The project will involve an investment of 200 million euros and create 600 jobs between direct and indirect during execution.

The tender procedure will be held with the utmost transparency, ensuring attendance and public participation, as well as compliance with all requirements in terms of technical and environmental perspective.

It is expected that work will begin before the end of this year.

With the announcement of the bid for this contest a milestone in a process leading to full recovery of the Bay, and settling an historical debt to the people of La Union and all of the Region of Murcia is reached.
