They ask the ministry on the regeneration of Portman Bay (01/10/2013)

In the new turn given by government regarding the regeneration of Portman Bay, based on the proposal by some companies for the exploitation of iron ore between the sterile Bay, last August the organizations neighborhood, social and environmental, all participants in the process followed by the regeneration of Portman Bay, sent to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, and the President of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, two letters in which express our concern about the questions posed by this new proposal and attached.

Upon cancellation by the Ministry of the bidding process of the draft environmental adaptation of Portman Bay and started work stoppage Short adequacy of San José, in response to which we referred earlier writings demanding no more delays this project, the Ministry informed us that they were doing "the work needed to enable a new tender" and that they would call the Monitoring Committee "before the summer".

However, none of this has happened, and what came to light in late June was a new project requested by Acciona and Aria companies for the exploitation of existing magnetite mining tailings Portman Bay, in exchange for the complete regeneration of Portman Bay to "zero cost" to the exchequer.

And, confirming that this is the path chosen by the three public administrations involved, the Directorate General of Industry, Energy and Mines has initiated proceedings for the declaration as sterile mineral deposit of Portman Bay, at the request of the said companies, while the Minister states that are preparing specifications to invite tenders for the public domain administrative concession over the bay of Portman.

Given this potential substantial change in environmental regeneration process of the Bay, which until now had been the result of consensus between the authorities involved and the different social agents, we have given the Ministry our discontent with the lack of official information and public participation and the failure to call the Monitoring Committee.

Also, we have requested response to the numerous questions about the economic and environmental viability raised by this new initiative, and the risk of environmental recovery project approved Bay resuspended stay and subject to a mining operation, which in any case will depend on the profitability of it, demanding an urgent meeting again, but have received a reply yet.

Meanwhile, some of the signatories have presented these same questions as the file arguments initiated by the Directorate G.

of Industry, Energy and Mines to declare Portman as mine site.

Expectantly contemplate the possibilities it can offer this new initiative, and support an assessment of the possibilities for the extraction and reuse of iron ore between the sterile Portman Bay to reduce regeneration project costs and facilitate Bay execution.

But we believe the best way this is cleared, is that the Ministry takes for bids again, without further delay, the project under the terms of the approved Environmental Impact Statement, and interested companies may offer as improvements reducing costs for iron ore exploitation, deriving any proposal to extend the project to the relevant process study and evaluation of economic viability, technical and environmental.
