Polyphonic music sneaks into the Cante de las Minas (03/08/2018)

The Union, August 3.

For two years now, the International Festival of Cante de las Minas has been paying homage to the country's diverse mining basins this year.

This year, this twinning will be with the Comarca del Bierzo due to the confluences between this mining land and La Unión.

Like the Sierra Minera, the Biercian mining dates back to Roman times, transforming its landscape into the famous marrows.

Subsequently, coal mines were one of the economic engines of the region.

Nowadays, tourism and the agri-food industry are.

The hall of acts of the City council of the Union has been the place that has welcomed that act of approach between both regions.

Pedro López Milán, Mayor of La Union and Executive President of the Cante de las Minas Foundation, has invited Gerardo Álvarez Courel, President of the El Bierzo Regional Council and Mari Paz Martínez, Mayor of Fabero, to sign in the honor book of the Foundation. .

For Álvarez Courel "it is a pride and an honor to be part, from this moment, of the history of La Unión, because no matter how far we are, we are united by the same mining past".

He also added "we also sing, in another way, but we also represent that suffering."

For his part, Lopez Milan, wanted to highlight that "this tribute is for all those miners who brought forward the Leon region of El Bierzo and the municipality of La Union with something that is typical of all miners, pain and suffering "

The mayor of La Union also added that "El Bierzo is an example of what should be the value of the rich industrial heritage it has"

Bembibrense Polyphonic Choral Performance

As music is another of the driving threads of the International Festival of Cante de las Minas, the region of El Bierzo has brought the music of its land as represented by the Bembibrense Polyphonic Choir.

Music that also represents the feeling of a mining region that is not and has not been alien to the avatars of mining throughout its history.

Thanks to a group of Bembibre fans, supported by Mr. Luis Olano Arias and with the approval of the City Council, they decided to form a choral group with which to give free rein to their musical aspirations and promote a quality musical culture in the locality and its surroundings.

In 1993, the Bembibrense Polyphonic Choir emerged, which, therefore, celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year.

At the moment it is formed by 32 members, grouped in four strings: sopranos, contraltos, tenors and basses.

The concerts offered and the places visited as Bembibre's musical ambassador are impossible to list.

Practically all the Spanish geography has heard their voices.

It is worth noting, due to its proximity, its numerous interventions in Galicia, Asturias, Santander and Castilla y León itself, performing in various events such as the "Day of the Galician Letters" in Padrón, Avilés Choral Festival, Choral Competition of The Mining Valleys in Mieres, Contest of Havanans of Arriondas, etc.

In 2007 he moved to Seville to give a concert at the Reales Alcázares and participate with the City Council of Bembibre in the X Festival Botillo de la Casa de León in Seville.

Participates in the Leonesa Choir Festival, having been the organizer of its II edition, held in Bembibre.

Every year, during the four weekends of the month of May, organizes the "Villa de Bembibre" Choral Festival, and this year its XIV edition is being held.

Corals from all over Spain and Portugal have participated in it.

Since 2015 he has participated regularly in the "Fair Saturday" event with a benefit concert for the benefit of Disthta ONGs.

In December 2007 he made the recording of his first CD with a sample of his repertoire and, recently, he has participated in the recording of a CD with regional songs from Bierzo.

The year 2015, on the occasion of the II centenary of the birth of Enrique Gil y Carrasco and the celebration of the Romantic Year, premiered a music-literary montage in honor of the writer framed in the International Congress of the Romantic Year that took place in Villafranca, Ponferrada and Bembibre and that subsequently lavished throughout the geography of Bercia and Leon.

His repertoire covers the most varied styles, Sacred and Renaissance Polyphony, Popular Songs of all the Spanish Regions, Havanans, Christmas Carols etc.

From its beginnings and for 10 years, it was directed by D. Luis Olano Arias, now deceased.

He was succeeded by Mrs. Elena Fernández Delgado and Mr. Alfonso Mantecón Aparicio.

Currently, the Bembibrense Polyphonic Choir is under the baton of Mrs. Zoé Blanco Alonso.
